Life outside Freemasonry.

Derek was married to his wife Brenda until her unfortunate death in 2005. He was educated at Lancaster
Royal Grammar School before joining the Merchant Navy as an Indentured Apprentice Engineer Officer
employed by the Shell Oil Company in 1957.  He started his training at Riversdale Technical College in the
South end of Liverpool and having met his wife there he set up home and remains there until the present
date. He obtained a First Class Combined Certificate of Competency (Steam & Motor) and became Chief
Engineer in Shell Oil Tankers until forced retirement for medical reasons curtailed his seagoing career in
1978. From there he went on to become the Chief Maintenance Officer at Liverpool John Lennon Airport
until he was transferred to the Mersey Tunnels in charge of all Civil & Mechanical Engineering at the demise
of the Shire Councils. Again, health forced him to retire early in 1998 and since then his hobbies have been
his mainstay of life. His hobbies are model engineering (been building a steam locomotive since 1978) and
he has a beautiful static caravan just outside Llandudno where he spends many happy hours with his dog
“Tug”.

Tug, a dog on a mission
Derek's little bit of heaven in Wales

“Tug” has explored most of the Irish Sea from the Isle of Anglesey and has made friends with the local
farmer’s livestock of beef cattle. Derek sees them more as a tasty steak “on the hoof”.
