Remembrance Sunday at Urmston |
Sunday 11th Hour of the 11th Day of November just as it was 100 years ago
| A day I always look forward to, what memories it brings to millions of people in the UK, we are free because they fought and died for us, I used to be the Police escort for Stretford Ex Servicemen every year to a big memorial in Trafford and boy there were some real characters on that walk, when we would get back to the club they would keep pushing tokens in my hand for another pint saying “have one on me son” I will never forget them. |

The Wreath.
| The Mark Masons at Urmston Masonic Hall have paraded for the last 5 years, we invite any other Degrees to join us and a few usually do, our wives and partners come along also, we then do a late breakfast back at the Hall and any monies received for the meal is donated to the Poppy Appeal. The Hall stands the cost of the food and also lays a wreath at the Cenotaph. We always wear our collars since the PGM gave permission and they do draw quite a lot of genuine interest from people all around us. |

Walk to Cenotaph
| The cenotaph is in the middle of a very large roundabout known as Davyhulme Circle, the crowds are always well in excess of 2000 and this year there were many children in attendance with their parents which was really good to see, it means they who died and are in fact are still dying for the country in conflicts around the world will never be forgotten. |

The Clock Strikes
| On the stroke of Eleven complete silence fell all around and the rain began to fall, which I found helped to remind us of the shocking conditions shown in the pictures this week to commemorate the 100 years Centenary of the Armistice. I was cold and getting wet but what is that compared to what they had suffered. On eventually arriving back home I must admit I had a wee dram before setting off to watch my team win again (Keith), that’s just let me add it up, 15 goals for and 1 against in the last three matches, all in all a really enjoyable, sad, happy, peaceful, memorable day, here’s to next year. |
